Redwood Remodel
The Redwood City remodel is an efficient modernization of a home from the ’60s for the client’s modern living needs. The existing plan was highly compartmentalized, separating or isolating the vital program components of a house such as the living, dining, and cooking. The remodel also tackled designing a highly efficient plan on a narrow site to accommodate a growing family in about 2000sf. In response to the restrictions in expanding outwards, the home extends upwards, lifting the ceiling to provide an expansion of space through increased ceiling height and an influx of natural light. To achieve this ceiling height, while preserving the essence of the urban elevation, the roof height lines were derived by projecting the roof ridges of the neighboring houses onto the project site. In order to preserve the building within the context of the street elevation, a main entrance was introduced at street level facing the street. By introducing a visible front entrance to the house a clarified entryway sequence was created, and in the process provided an interaction with the street.
